RIDING THROUGH WAVES OF GRIEFGrief is like treading water in a dark, cold raging sea. The waves (a favorite song, an anniversary, a holiday, a special place, a particular mental picture of mate) pound you until you’re worn out from crying and screaming. This causes a coughing spell. Stomach cramps develop. Soon your heart is beating faster than Gene Krupa’s drumsticks. You try sucking air into your lungs. Heavy breathing doesn’t stop. When the pain is unbearable you entertain thoughts of drowning. However, with renewed inner strength you get the energy to swim through the waves.

On the distant shores are family, friends and grief counselors reaching out to help you survive. Each day the waves strike. You brace for the impact. Gradually, the waves become less intense.Without the divine lifesaver, you may have difficulty surviving in the sea of sorrow. Peter learned this lesson well (Matthew 14:30, 31). Peter was walking towards Jesus on the squally sea. Out of the blue appeared high waves. Peter became anxious. He focused on the waves and not on the Lord. When Peter began to sink, Jesus reached out His hand and said “O man of little faith, why did you doubt Me?”Just like friends and family, Good Grief God!

represent the hands of God, lifting you up. So when a wave of sorrow strikes, reach out for help. Have faith, one of the Lord’s lifesavers is nearby to give you a hand. May the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob take a liking to you, and give you the strength and courage to ride through those towering waves of grief.
