Augustus Toplady Freed was a Canadian newspaperman who was working in New York when the Civil War broke out. After serving with a New York Militia regiment, he re-enlisted with a Connecticut infantry regiment, mustering out as a sergeant after seeing action in several major battles.

Eventually Freed returned to Canada and became editor of the Hamilton Spectator. He was also active in the local Grand Army of the Republic post in Hamilton, Ontario -- one of the few in Canada. He died in 1924 and is buried at the the Hamilton City Cemetery.
