X. p. 242, the Letter of Directions of John Holmes, wishing that some parts of it were clearer, but not doubting its correctness as a copy.On the 15th of April last, through the kindness of Mr. Timothy Holmes, and his son, Silas R. Holmes, both of Hadlyme, in East Haddam, Conn., I was put in possession of the original Letter of Directions, with a manuscript copy of it, intended to assist those who could not read the original.On showing this to some friends and pointing out the variations between the original and that copy in the Register, I was urged to prepare an exact transcript, with notes, and append to it such facts respecting the descendants of Thomas Holmes, as I had already collected in manuscript in the work before named.
