A story about two teenager/early-20s sisters active in Komsomol (Communist Youth) in late 1920s Soviet Union. While Ninka is moderate, Lelka is a firebreathing radical who drops out of school to start work at the Red Hero galosh factory in order to be close to the proletariat and join in political work there to implement the first five year plan and a bit later the forced collectivisation drive in the countryside. If you know Russian history from the 1920s and early 1930s, the books has no surprising content. Its all there: stakhanovist work on the one hand, lazy griping workers on the other, political meetings and classes at the workplace party branch, ultraleftist and workerist tendencies, real proletarians vs.

workers whose parents are shopkeepers or peasants, what are the Komsomol members duties etc. etc., like cut out of a piece of cardboard – all bound up with human relations stuff mostly involving Lelkas various arguments and love interests. The story progresses in episodic bursts of various lengths, and not too many characters are given any depth- only Lelka, really. The book isnt all bad, but then again I read it as a nightstand book a dozen pages at a time just before going to sleep. If I had had to use my real time to plod through this book, I might feel differently.
